Accessibility checklists published for residencies and funders

As part of the Making Space for Artistry project, accessibility checklists aimed at residencies and funders have been produced in Finnish, Swedish, and English. These checklists help improve the accessibility of residencies and grants for diverse artists. This will enrich both Finnish art and the artistic community in Finland.

The checklist provides an easy way to review essential accessibility measures. Not all steps need to be taken immediately; the list can be adapted as needed. Working on accessibility is a long-term process. The checklist focuses on accessibility from the perspectives of disabled artists and artists who use sign language, but it can also be considered from the needs of artists with families or those travelling from outside the EU and Schengen areas.

Our goal is to open the doors of more residencies to disabled artists and artists who use sign language. It’s also important to lower the barrier for applying for arts funding. Disabled artists and artists who use sign language may require funding for expenses such as travel or accommodation for assistants or interpreters, costs related to guide dogs, or various aids to facilitate artistic work. The opportunity to apply for grants for such expenses is significant for them.

We hope that residencies will provide information about the accessibility and inclusivity of their facilities or any deficiencies on their own websites. The same information should also be included in the residency directory on the FAIRE Finnish Artist Residency Network website at fairenetwork.com.
