Maarit Hedman and Anu Haapanen: Fragments of Darkness

2.–18.12.2022 Gallery Kortteeri (Tornio)

Maarit Hedman draws with orange pastel on large, black paper.

Exhibition Fragments of Darkness by Maarit Hedman and Anu Haapanen dives into the dialogue of light and darkness. The exhibition is also a dialogue between two artists, who work with different starting points. It is a process, where an artist who has lost her sight and an artist who sees can reflect their working through each other and find new perspectives to artistic work.

Anu Haapanen used to work as an assistant in Maarit Hedman’s art projects and different art workshops of visually impaired people. The idea of a joint exhibition matured by working together with art, professional exchange of thoughts and artistic interaction. The Making space for artistry project offered a chance for working together in a residency and realisation of the exhibition project about the experience of darkness. The exhibition includes mixed media and acrylic paintings, and charcoal and pastel drawings.

Maarit Hedman is a visual artist and art pedagogue, who graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1994. Besides her artistic work, she works as an art educator and trainer in many different projects. Anu Haapanen has studied visual art in Lahti Art Institute and Aalto university, as well as art history in the University of Helsinki. She works multidisciplinary in the field of visual culture. Both artists have held several solo and joint exhibitions, but this is their first joint project together as pair work.
