Maarit Hedman and Anu Haapanen: Fragments of Darkness

2.–18.12.2022 Gallery Kortteeri (Tornio)

Maarit Hedman draws with orange pastel on large, black paper.

Exhibition Fragments of Darkness by Maarit Hedman and Anu Haapanen dives into the dialogue of light and darkness. The exhibition is also a dialogue between two artists, who work with different starting points. It is a process, where an artist who has lost her sight and an artist who sees can reflect their working through each other and find new perspectives to artistic work.

Anu Haapanen used to work as an assistant in Maarit Hedman’s art projects and different art workshops of visually impaired people. The idea of a joint exhibition matured by working together with art, professional exchange of thoughts and artistic interaction. The Making space for artistry project offered a chance for working together in a residency and realisation of the exhibition project about the experience of darkness. The exhibition includes mixed media and acrylic paintings, and charcoal and pastel drawings.

Maarit Hedman is a visual artist and art pedagogue, who graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1994. Besides her artistic work, she works as an art educator and trainer in many different projects. Anu Haapanen has studied visual art in Lahti Art Institute and Aalto university, as well as art history in the University of Helsinki. She works multidisciplinary in the field of visual culture. Both artists have held several solo and joint exhibitions, but this is their first joint project together as pair work.

Aino Laiho & Olga Green: Taka-ajatuksia – Baktankar – Ulterior Motives

3.–20.11.2022 Haparanda Railway Station

On the video: Information about the exhibition in Finnish Sign Language

The exhibition Taka-ajatuksia – Baktankar – Ulterior motives exhibition is the result of Aino Laiho’s and Olga Green’s first joint residency and numerous conversations. During the fall, the artist duo has been working at the Haparanda Railway Station in the same space where the exhibition is now built. On display there will be drawings, paintings and installations, and some of the works also use the UV light effect.

Laiho and Green are Deaf Sign Language users, millennials and friends who live in the capital region. In the new environment of the artist residency in Haparanda, they have explored themes related to the border, especially between different languages and between the Deaf and the hearing. The working methods of the artists are different in style, but they are united by the same sense of humour and enthusiasm to observe the surrounding reality.

Green is a self-taught artist who is particularly distinguished by her insightful and sympathetic line drawings. During the residency period, Green also wanted to try new techniques, such as stencil painting. Laiho is a designer by training and after feeling disconnected from making art for a few years, has found the joy in it again. During the fall, she has been most inspired to create three-dimensional works that take a stand.

The exhibition at the Haparanda Railway Station is the first solo exhibition for both artists. You can follow the work of the artist duo on Instagram on the Muukalaiset rajalla account (@muukalaiset_rajalla).

Colours carry, colours transport, with colours

Sofia paints on a big canvas.

Haparanda Library 20.10.–6.11.2022.

Sofia Karinen chooses the themes for her paintings from her everyday environment and the surrounding nature. She photographs interesting objects with her smartphone and composes pictures on canvas with colourful oil paint. Usually she does not sketch, but starts painting right away. According to Karinen, mixing fitting hues is a challenging and interesting part of the painting process.

The even hypnotic feeling of space in landscape and interior works is created by the variation of small and large areas of colour. The paintings of this exhibition include views from Tornio and Oulu regions as well as France.

Sofia Karinen is a 22-year-old Finnish-French visual artist. Drawing and painting have been important for Karinen since her childhood. She started art studies already at a young age in Oulu. Karinen has continued her art studies for two years in Liminka Art School, focusing on for example oil painting and graphics.

The artworks of Karinen have been presented before at the spring exhibitions of Liminka Art School and she has received scholarship by Oulun Saskiat Association in 2021. The exhibition of Haparanda Library is Karinen’s first solo exhibition.
